I am an artist and a poet, combining images and words, ideas and materials. I love the process of bookmaking, which is technical yet filled with the possibilities that a container for an artist’s ideas must be. Paper and paint, lines and words- these are the raw materials of my work.
Since moving to Maine in 2010 I have been enamored by the intertidal zone near my house in South Thomaston. I have been studying the creatures and plants that find their home in this rich and forceful territory of tides. Metaphorically, this littoral zone is a space where life gets buffered twice daily by nature. And still these creatures hold fast – as in the case of barnacle – or waft cleverly in the shallows. Perhaps this is the only way we have to approach life. Realistically, it is a space of great beauty, wonder, and some worry for its future.
In much of my poetry, my deeply religious past contrasts with my current views of religion, and my faith and delight in the natural world. My poetry is included in two anthologies and several journals, including The Maine Review, Salamander, Spillway, Barrow Street, Off the Coast, and Muddy River Review. I hope to publish my manuscript, Burning Down the House, as soon as I can stop editing!
Here's a short one!
Fury at the Corners of My House
Coronets of clouds, blasts
of breath raging, growling. A squall
that whites out the sea and fields,
TV brings me news, I watch the facts.
My stone wall blurs its hard-edged
geometry. Disappeared garage doors
and the neighbor's houses.
I am afraid of this
Wildness that spends itself
on itself, cannot sit still
enough to love its own made beauty
Before moving to Maine, I lived and worked in Boston where I was director of museum education at the Massachusetts College of Art. I found MassArt inspirational – encountering student work wherever you turned, a dynamic faculty and art enthusiastic staff as colleagues. One did not have to explain the meaning of art while working there. I hold on to that spirit and have looked to create that same spirit here in Maine.
Currently I am the owner of 26 Split Rock Cove, a privately owned artist community of studios, artist living space, and workshops overlooking Mussel Ridge Channel in South Thomaston, ME. Here, I get to meet artists and writers who come to this beautiful corner of the world to work. It’s clear to me why so many artists have come to Maine to make art.
